Ross calls getting a No. 1 receiver the top Dolphins offseason priority

Posted by Josh Alper on October 10, 2012, 10:35 AM EDT

We aren’t even at the halfway point of the 2012 season, but the Dolphins are already putting together their plans for the offseason.

That was the message owner Stephen Ross sent to team employees at a meeting last month, according to Mike Beradino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Ross told the crowd that acquiring a No. 1 wide receiver would be the team’s “top offseason priority” and that they would do “whatever it takes” to land such a player because it would help quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

As Beradino points out, the last time the Dolphins wound up trading for Brandon Marshall the last time they made similar signals. With a fair amount of cap space and five picks early in next April’s draft, the Dolphins would seem to be well positioned to make a big move.

Ross’ comments came before Brian Hartline’s 253-yard game against the Cardinals. While the team is trying to sign Hartline to an extension, that probably wouldn’t stand in the way of bringing a top receiver into the fold to round out the offense. The fact that Tannehill has made such a quick transition to the pro game and that Hartline has flourished in his current role only makes the possible acquisition seem like a better idea because it would accelerate the offense’s growth without needing to be the only option on the field.

It would be interesting if Wes Welker, who can be a free agent after the year, winds up on their radar. Welker’s career really started in Miami after a brief stay in San Diego, but the Dolphins wound up dealing him the New England for a pair of draft picks. You know what Welker’s done since then, but he’s hardly the only potential name on the market. Dwayne Bowe, Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings, who played for head coach Joe Philbin when both were in Green Bay, could also be on the open market.
Keep up the good work Matt Moore!

As Homer Simpson would say "DUH!"

I just wish he would quit meddling so much. Let the coaches and the GM TCOB and stay the eff out of the way. It's no secret what our needs are. If Rosses boy  Jeffy Jeffy Jeff Ireland wouldn't have reached for Egnew and taken a WR like TY Hilton or Greg Childs(Arkansas) Childs went to Minneasota where he will probably NEVER learn anything with that mess of an offense they have there.
Keep up the good work Matt Moore!

He also has Reggie Bush to decide on, but I'm convinced as long as Jeff Ireland is calling any shots in any capacity for this team
the "Mediocoreami Dolphins" will continue........

This may surprise you but Jeffy Jeffy Jeff stock went up after this past win. Olivier Vernon had a huge game. Once again Tanneyhill did well. Pouncey looks like he is the real deal. I don't know how Martin is doing or how he graded out so......... Marlon Moore more or less had a big game as Fishers secondary double teamed and held Hartline all day. Good for Moore!

I don't know who we could or would get were we to send Jeffy packing. I just don't know.

Maybe YOU??!!

I'm sorry, Pouncey was going in the 1st round to someone, everyone knew he was the real deal. Marlon Moore needs a little
moore than 1 good game. As for Vernon, he too has done little so far until he played the Rams. Tannehill has done better
than expected, but who knows what his future holds as teams get more familiar with him. I understand what you are saying
but I still see a 3-3 team with a favorable schedule ahead...we shall see how Ireland's stock holds up, IMO, it liquidated a
long time ago.

Don't get me wrong Chuck I have been calling  for JI's yob for as long as anyone. I just don't know who we could get to replace him and who would want to work as Dolphins GM under Ross. Oh I'm sure there are people. But who? Have you ever given it any serious thought? I would say, just offhand that having Stephen Ross as the owner would be a deterrent to some potential people.

I have a feeling that Ross is a little bit scared to Fire Ireland for the very reason I stated in the above paragraph.

Oh well we'll see. I'm not gonna root for the team to lose hoping that will get JI canned. Not at all!

We'll see against a bad Jets team this week how good the Phins are.  It's still a division rival on the road so no matter how bad the Jets are (they put up 26 pts last week) if we win, I'm all in on this team and that includes Ireland.
