Rex Ryan Is Talking…Again
AUTHOR: Mike Rosenbloom |
Seems you can’t go longer than a few days without the New York Jets opinionated coach saying or doing something to stir the pot. At least this time, he isn’t dressing up.
Jets coach Rex Ryan, speaking to reporters at the NFL Combine on Thursday personally guaranteed a Jets Super Bowl victory in 2012.
“I believe this is the year we’re going to do it. I believe this is the year we’re going to win the Super Bowl. The fact is, I thought we’d win it the first two years. I guarantee we’ll win it this year.”
This isn’t the first (…or second, …or third) time Ryan has made headlines. As well as provoking his own players to speak their minds whenever they please, Ryan (more specifically, Ryan’s wife) was also the subject of a foot fetish video that hit the web in the December, prompting Wes Welker to have a little fun at Ryan’s expense.
I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I’m getting a little tired of this Rex Ryan circus. What is the point of guaranteeing this? If they don’t win it, so what? Ryan makes another outlandish guarantee next year and I write another article criticizing him. If they win, Rex all of the sudden looks like a prophet and I end up with a big foot in my mouth (no pun intended). Just support your team, stand on the sidelines, and let them play the game. Not only does this put pressure on Ryan, it also put an enormous amount of pressure on young quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Look, regardless of what their 11-5 record indicates, the Jets only beat two legitmate teams during the 2010 regular season. (The Patriots, once, and the Steelers) Those other 9 wins? Against the Dolphins (sorry), Bills (twice), Vikings, Broncos, Lions, Browns, Texans, and Bengals. I won’t even get into some of the questionable calls that got the Jets some of those W’s.
Yes, they made the AFC Championship back-to-back years. With an rapidly aging LaDainian Tomlinson, and the (possible) free agency of both Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards, plus dangerous return man Brad Smith, I don’t see the Jets getting to the Divisional Round again, let alone the Super Bowl.
Pizza Boy:
The Jets could have easily gone 9-7, since both the Browns and the Texans could have won those games as easily as they lost them.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the Jets but they won those games. It don't matter how or whether they COULD have lost. They won. They made the plays. Their GM went out and got the players that got the job done. Sanchez is a dog at QB but he comes through in the clutch where as Henne can't even reach the dayum clutch pedal!

Jimmuh Johnson used to talk **** like this when he first signed-on with Miami. "We're the team to beat etc etc". Jimmuh never got past the divisonal round of the playoffs and few folks - even those with good memories - cared enough to rub his nose in it after he failed to win and rode off into coaching oblivion. All I can say is that several of the teams who actually were of championship calibre actually had plenty of motivation to beat Jimmuh when they took on the Phins in 96-99. I recall Dallas, the Broncos and (of course) the Jags really putting the boots to Miami during some high profile games when Jimmuh ran the ship. I suspect that quality teams such as Pitts, Baltimore etc will quietly relish shutting Rex up in 2011. At least the Jets are relevant these days - which is more that Miami can say.
